A light
in memory

When we say goodbye to someone we love, memories become an important anchor. The memorial lantern was created to let those memories shine – a light in the darkness that makes room for both grief and presence.

The memorial lantern invites us to be present with the memories.

Created with Love

– shaped with Care

When we lose someone, it's often the quiet moments that leave the deepest impression. A leaf swaying in the wind. A butterfly landing on a flower. A small light shining in the darkness.

Through 15 years of work developing cemeteries, landscape architect Signe Moos has seen how people experience grief in different ways – and how important it is to have spaces where one can simply be with their sorrow. Not necessarily to understand it, but just to be present with whatever is there.

Although Signe’s projects may vary greatly, her mission remains the same: to create spaces where people can be with their grief and find peace in their own personal way.

The Vision

On a cold autumn day in 2016, Signe had a vision. She had noticed how more and more people were lighting candles at gravesites – living flames glowing in the cemeteries like small testaments to human connection and memories that live on. But she also saw how the lights were often blown over, extinguished by the rain, or scattered by the wind. That’s when the idea of Mindelanternerne (Memory Lanterns) was born – a simple and durable form that represents the memory of a loved one while also protecting the flame from the elements, allowing it to burn – quietly, gently, and continuously. A lit candle, a flame – the very symbol of life. A symbol of a life that once was, and that now lives on in the memories of those left behind.

It would take two years before she held the first prototype in her hands, and another year before the final product was ready. Countless attempts were needed before the finished Mindelanterne had the pure and simple design she had envisioned – along with the durability required for a memorial to remain beautiful for many, many years. Today, the Mindelanterne is produced by the same local Danish metalworking company that has been part of the process from the very beginning – and continues to support the new ideas that still come to Signe Moos. Because even though her main profession is landscape architecture, Mindelanternerne have found a lasting place in her heart – their meaning strikes close to home.

”I feel a special drive when I work with the Mindelanterner. I think it’s because I could have used something like this myself when I lost both of my parents within a year at the age of 19. It's about creating a sense of softness and depth – a space where there is room for grief, room to sit with it, and maybe even feel a sense of peace within it.

With the Mindelanterne, I try to create a space – a gentle space – where it’s completely OK to grieve, because there is also something beautiful in sorrow. Grief is a testament to the fact that we have loved – and, in truth, it’s really just love for those we’ve lost."

The Idea and the Story

For landscape architect Signe Moos, the Memorial Lanterns are a heartfelt project – born out of her own experience with loss.

While working at a cemetery, the idea arose: a personal lantern that spreads light and creates a dignified and atmospheric space for grief and memories.

The lanterns are created with respect for those we’ve lost – expressed through a simple design.

I feel a special drive when I work with the Memorial Lanterns. I think it’s because I could have used something like this when I lost both my parents within a year at a young age.

A modern grave monument with light and meaning

As a landscape architect with extensive experience in cemetery landscapes, Signe Moos has seen how people experience grief differently and how important it is to have a space to be in it.

The Memorial Lanterns were created to offer a peaceful place where memories can shine. When grieving, it is often the quiet moments that leave the greatest mark – the wind moving a flower, a butterfly landing in the grass, a small light burning in the dark.

When memories are allowed to shine

The design of the Memorial Lanterns stems from Signe’s years of shaping places where nature and people meet. Here, Signe’s passions blend into a whole – where creativity and respect for nature go hand in hand.

She also feels a personal drive with this project, as the idea is rooted in her own experience of loss.

An alternative to the classic gravestone

Memorial Lanterns combine aesthetics and function in a simple design that protects the flame and allows the light to continue shining. Created from Signe Moos’ love of natural forms and her eye for spaces where grief and beauty coexist.

Natural. Timeless. Personal.

A calm, simple structure with cutouts that let light flow while protecting the flame from wind and weather, anchored firmly in the ground with a soil anchor.

The lanterns are made in Denmark by a local blacksmith who has been involved from the first idea to the final expression. They are crafted from corten steel – a living material that develops a warm, rust-colored surface over time. Corten steel requires no maintenance and can last over 30 years. This means the lanterns are made with both respect for nature and care for resources.

Designed and produced in Denmark. Made from corten steel with an estimated lifespan of 30–40 years under optimal conditions.

Choose from 4 motifs

Each lantern can be personalized with one of four motifs: a starry sky, a flock of birds, an angel, or a flower.

Small symbols that many associate with hope, transition, and presence – letting the light flow out and casting beautiful shadows on the surroundings.

The motifs are thoughtfully designed to enhance the experience of the lantern when lit. Each cutout is carefully shaped by Signe Moos to create a beautiful light effect when the lantern is in use.

Since the lanterns have four sides, Signe designed them with movement and storytelling in mind – visible in the bird and starry sky motifs, which evolve on each side like a journey in form and light.

A lasting place for presence and reflection

Names and dates are engraved on a brass plate, which can accommodate several people for a shared memory if desired.

The lanterns can serve as a grave monument at a cemetery or be placed in a garden – a lasting place where light is allowed to shine on – quietly and meaningfully.
